Como Weather by Month: Heat, Rain and What Closes

A reanalysis grid, not a town station

Every temperature and rain figure on this page comes from the Open-Meteo Historical Weather API, which is built on the ERA5 reanalysis. The figures are daily means for the grid point at 45.81N 9.09E, covering 1996 to 2025. A reanalysis grid is a model of the climate over a square of land, not a thermometer on a wall in town.

The 1-2°C caveat

The grid point reads roughly 1-2°C cooler than the town itself on summer afternoons, because the model averages over its cell rather than measuring a city street. On a July afternoon in Como, expect the real high to sit a shade above the 27°C (81°F) shown here. Winter figures are less affected.

What the dataset does not contain

The dataset has no rainy-day counts, no sunshine hours, no lake water temperature, no snow figures and no humidity. If you want to know how many days a month it rains, or how warm the lake is for swimming, this source does not give it. No official ARPA Lombardia or station climate normals were available for Como when this page was built, so no second source could be added.

Spring (March to May)

Average highs climb from 13°C (56°F) in March to 21°C (70°F) in May. Lows rise from 4°C to 12°C. Rain builds steadily, from 91 mm in March to 156 mm in May, so spring is mild but increasingly wet. May and June are when the Brunate info point and then the Monumento ai Caduti return to their summer hours, and the funicular to Brunate runs daily 06:00-24:00 all year regardless of the month, per ATM.

Summer (June to August)

Average highs sit at 26 to 27°C (78 to 81°F) and lows at 16 to 19°C. July is the driest of the three at 124 mm, August the wettest at 160 mm, so a summer thunderstorm is a normal possibility rather than an exception. Evenings stay mild with lows of 19°C, which suits a late lakefront walk. This is when the summer boat timetable runs at full strength, and the Navigazione summer sheet covers 1 July to 4 October 2026.

Note the grid caveat in the dataset section: afternoon highs in town often run 1-2°C above these figures.

Autumn (September to November)

September keeps an average high of 22°C (72°F) with a low of 15°C, then October drops to 17°C (63°F) and November to 12°C (53°F). Rain climbs through the season, 136 mm in September, 164 mm in October and 175 mm in November, the wettest month of the year. The autumn boat timetable runs 5 October to 1 November 2026, and the Monumento ai Caduti closes for the year on 4 November.

The Faro Voltiano lighthouse in Brunate is no help in any season for now: it has been closed since 2024 for repairs, and neither Comune publishes a reopening date.

Winter (December to February)

Average highs are 8 to 9°C (46 to 49°F) and lows 0 to 1°C. Rain is at its lowest, 70 to 82 mm, so winter is cold and grey rather than drenched. The dataset carries no snow figures, so this page makes no claim about snow in Como. For a cold wet day the cathedral is the obvious shelter, with tourist visiting hours Monday to Friday 10:30-17:30 and Saturday 10:45-16:30.

The funicular keeps its 06:00-24:00 daily service through winter, and the Brunate info point drops to weekends and holidays 10:00-16:00 from October to April.

January: 8°C High, 70 mm

Average high 8°C (46°F), average low 0°C, 70 mm of rain. The coldest month on the grid, with a low of 0°C. The cathedral closes to tourist visits on 6 January in the 2026 calendar, and the Brunate info point opens only at weekends and on holidays. Museums keep their Tuesday to Sunday rhythm.

February: 9°C High, 70 mm

Average high 9°C (49°F), average low 1°C, 70 mm of rain. Barely warmer than January, and as dry. Short days favour one indoor stop and one lakefront walk rather than a boat day.

The Tempio Voltiano and the Pinacoteca stay on 10:00-18:00, closed Mondays.

March: 13°C High, 91 mm

Average high 13°C (56°F), average low 4°C, 91 mm of rain. Highs climb to 13°C and rain starts to build. Easter week closures at the cathedral fall at the turn of March and April in 2026, so check the cathedral page before a spring weekend.

April: 17°C High, 130 mm

Average high 17°C (62°F), average low 7°C, 130 mm of rain. The first of the mild months at 17°C, and already a wet one at 130 mm. From 5 April the Villa Olmo park switches to its summer hours, open until 23:00.

May: 21°C High, 156 mm

Average high 21°C (70°F), average low 12°C, 156 mm of rain. Warm enough for long walks at 21°C, but one of the four wettest months. The Brunate info point goes daily from May, and the official bathing season opens on 1 May.

June: 26°C High, 142 mm

Average high 26°C (78°F), average low 16°C, 142 mm of rain. Summer arrives at 26°C. The Monumento ai Caduti opens for the season on 2 June, with visits on Wednesday and Friday mornings and weekend afternoons.

July: 27°C High, 124 mm

Average high 27°C (81°F), average low 19°C, 124 mm of rain. The warmest month with August, and the driest of the three summer months at 124 mm. The Navigazione summer timetable starts on 1 July, and evening lows of 19°C keep the lakefront pleasant after dark.

August: 27°C High, 160 mm

Average high 27°C (80°F), average low 19°C, 160 mm of rain. As warm as July but much wetter at 160 mm, so an afternoon storm plan is sensible. The cathedral closes to tourist visits on 15 and 31 August in the 2026 calendar.

September: 22°C High, 136 mm

Average high 22°C (72°F), average low 15°C, 136 mm of rain. Highs of 22°C and the bathing season's last month, which ends on 30 September. The summer boat timetable runs on until 4 October, and ASF switches some bus lines to winter timetables from 28 September.

October: 17°C High, 164 mm

Average high 17°C (63°F), average low 11°C, 164 mm of rain. The last mild month at 17°C, and the second wettest. The autumn boat timetable runs from 5 October, and from 1 October the Villa Olmo park closes at 20:00.

November: 12°C High, 175 mm

Average high 12°C (53°F), average low 6°C, 175 mm of rain. The wettest month of the year at 175 mm. The Monumento ai Caduti closes on 4 November, the autumn boat timetable ends on 1 November, and the cathedral closes to tourist visits on 1 and 2 November.

Keep the rainy day plan close.

December: 8°C High, 82 mm

Average high 8°C (47°F), average low 1°C, 82 mm of rain. Cold again at 8°C, but drier than autumn at 82 mm. The cathedral closes to tourist visits on 8, 13, 25, 26 and 31 December, and the Christmas event's dates were not yet published, so follow Como Christmas market.

Como gets its heaviest rain in May (156 mm), August (160 mm), October (164 mm) and November (175 mm). Autumn is the damp stretch. Winter is the driest stretch, at 70 to 82 mm, and July the driest summer month at 124 mm.

One honest limit: the dataset gives monthly totals, not rainy-day counts. It cannot tell you whether 175 mm in November falls over twenty grey days or a handful of heavy ones, so this page does not guess.

What to do with a wet day

Rain is a reason to have an indoor plan, not to cancel the trip. The rainy day plan sets out a full wet-weather route. The Silk Museum is the strongest indoor stop, open Tuesday to Sunday. The Tempio Voltiano on the lakefront is another, open Tuesday to Sunday 10:00-18:00 with last entry at 17:30.

Watch the day of the week. Tempio Voltiano, the Pinacoteca and the Silk Museum all close on Mondays, so a rainy Monday in Como has fewer indoor options than a rainy Wednesday.

Seasonal Rules by Service

The pattern is simple. Boats, the war memorial and the Brunate info point all run reduced or changed schedules outside the warm months, and the cathedral closes on fixed religious dates through late autumn and December. Check the row for your month before fixing a plan.

Christmas and Summer Swimming

The Christmas event deserves one extra line. Its dates for the coming winter are not yet announced, so plan around the generic pattern of late November to early January and follow Como Christmas market for news of the next edition. For summer swimming, read Lido di Villa Olmo before you pack a towel, since its season details are the one gap in this table.

The averages translate into a handful of practical decisions.

In July and August the average low is 19°C, so evenings on the lakefront stay mild and a heavy layer is unnecessary. In January the average low is 0°C, so a proper coat is not optional, and the wait on an open pier for the boat is the coldest part of the day.

Rain peaks in autumn and August. Boats run on published seasonal timetables, so an autumn trip means the autumn sheet, which you can check on Como ferry before travelling.

For Brunate, the funicular runs daily 06:00-24:00 all year, so the only thing the weather decides is the view. Go up on a clear morning or evening, since cloud over the first basin hides exactly what you paid to see. The Faro Voltiano at the top has been closed since 2024, so do not plan the climb. Brunate funicular covers the ride itself.

This page gives long-term averages, and averages cannot tell you whether it will rain tomorrow. For Como weather tomorrow or over the next few days, use a national forecast service such as the Italian Air Force weather service (Aeronautica Militare) or your usual international forecaster. Those services update daily.
