Como Travel Tips: Plan the Trip Page by Page

The choice is simple once you know what each line is for. From Milano Centrale, Trenord regional trains run to Como San Giovanni in about 40 minutes, roughly 17 services a day, first departure 06:43 and last 21:43, covering 47 km at $6.23 (€5.40). From Milano Cadorna, the Ferrovienord line runs to Como Lago in about 60 minutes, around 34 services a day, 46 km at the same $6.23 (€5.40). Como Lago is the lakefront station, minutes from the ferry piers, while Como San Giovanni sits uphill above the old town. If your first act in town is a boat, Como Lago wins. Boats leave from a single landing stage in the city centre: the Navigazione Laghi pier is on Piazza Cavour at the lake front. That same square holds the main tourist office, the IAT, at Piazza Cavour 17, phone +39 031 269712. The ferry timetable and fare bands are explained at Como ferry.

Read as a planner, the table says three things. First, June to August are the warm months, with average highs of 26-27°C, and July and August average lows of 19°C, which keeps evenings comfortable for a lakeside walk. Second, the wettest stretch is October and November at 164 and 175 mm, with May at 156 mm and August at 160 mm also on the wet side, so a rain plan is not paranoid in any of those months. Third, winter is mild for the latitude, January and December both average a high of 8°C.

Two calendar notes for planning a trip to Como. The funicular to Brunate is listed by ATM as running daily from 06:00 to 24:00, so the viewpoint has no closed season on the operator's page. And Como's Christmas event, the Città dei Balocchi, typically fills the weeks from late November into early January, but the dates for the coming edition were not yet published when this page was checked, so do not build dates around it yet. Mondays at the Museums

Mondays are the day to give to the lake rather than the museums. The Tempio Voltiano, the museum to Alessandro Volta on the lakefront, opens Tuesday to Sunday 10:00-18:00 with last entry at 17:30, closed all Mondays except 6 April and 31 August this year, and it also closes 1 January, 1 May, 15 August and 25 December. The Silk Museum keeps the same rhythm: closed Mondays, and on Tuesdays it opens in the afternoon only, 14:00-18:00, against full days of 10:00-13:00 and 14:00-18:00 from Wednesday to Sunday.

The exhibition halls of the Museo Archeologico Paolo Giovio are currently closed to the public for maintenance work, and the Comune's page gives no reopening date, so leave it off the list entirely for now.

Villa Olmo and the Casa del Fascio

Two buildings have unusual access rules. The Villa Olmo villa itself is closed for restoration, but the park around it is regularly open and free to enter, though access is only partially accessible for reduced mobility. The Casa del Fascio, Terragni's modernist landmark, has no general public opening at all: it is visited only on scheduled guided tours, run by Attilio Terragni through Slow Lake Como, on dates Slow Lake Como publishes, access limited to the atrium, and ID submitted in advance by email.

The Cathedral's Week

The cathedral splits its week. Como Cathedral's tourist visiting hours, which cover the transept, choir, sacristies and the upper walkways on an integrated ticket, run Monday to Friday 10:30-17:30 and Saturday 10:45-16:30. On Sundays and holidays the tourist hours shrink to 11:00-11:45 and 13:00-16:30.

Free prayer-only access to the church is separate and runs weekdays 07:30-19:00. If the upper walkways matter to you, arrive on a weekday. The interior detail is at What to see in Como and the visit options at Como Cathedral.

Como's tourist tax is charged per person per night for a maximum of 4 consecutive nights, at a rate set by the category of the property, not by what the room costs. The current tariff sheet from the Comune di Como, approved by Giunta delibera n. 387, is summarised in the table. You pay it to the accommodation operator, who issues a receipt.

Minors up to fourteen years of age are exempt, as are the guides and drivers accompanying organised groups, one companion of a patient in a municipal health facility or Sant'Anna Hospital, disabled dependents with certification plus one companion, non-resident University of Como students aged 26 or under, civil servants and police on service, and volunteers at major public events. The exemption needs a declaration handed to the manager. The revenue funds tourism services, events, public spaces and green areas, and the tax has been charged since 2013.

A four-night stay for two adults in a 3-star hotel therefore carries $36.90 (€32) of tax on top of the room bill, worth knowing before you compare prices at Where to stay. The wider budget picture is at Como costs.

The arithmetic that matters is short. The funicular ride to Brunate takes 7 minutes and runs until midnight, so a viewpoint trip is about an hour of your day, our estimate, not half of it. The trains from Milan run in 40 to 60 minutes, so Como works either as a day trip or as a base, and the transport does not punish either choice. A single day in the city comfortably holds the cathedral in its morning tourist hours, the Piazza Cavour pier for a boat loop, and the funicular for the evening light, with the Monday closures noted above deciding which museums, if any, fit.

If you give the city two days, the second absorbs Brunate properly and one guided tour, or a longer boat run toward Bellagio at band 6, $13.84 (€12) one way on the ordinary battello. What does not fit in any schedule is the Museo Archeologico Paolo Giovio, whose halls are closed for maintenance, and the Casa del Fascio unless your dates land on one of its guided visit days. Prices and Opening Hours

• Tempio Voltiano admission price. The museum's page links a rates PDF whose numbers did not render in the fetch, and the figure is paid rather than free, but the amount is not stated.
• Civic museums combined ticket. The figure that circulates came from a third-party aggregation of the museum system, not the Comune's own ticketing page, and given the archaeological museum's closure it is unclear what the ticket currently covers, so no figure is printed.
• Villa Olmo park opening hours. Seasonal hours circulate in search results, but the governing ordinance page could not be read directly, so the hours are not stated here. The park being open and free is verified.
• Basilica di Sant'Abbondio visiting hours. The figures circulating come from third-party aggregation of the basilica's own site, which was not directly fetched, so they are not printed.
• Basilica di San Fedele visiting hours. Two different hour sets circulate across sources and the parish site was not directly fetched, a conflict, so no hours are printed. Entry is free as an active parish church.

Numbers, Dates and Data

• Como's population. The figure that circulates comes from an aggregator citing ISTAT, and the ISTAT database itself was not queried, so no number is printed.
• Road distance from Como to Milan or to Chiasso. No official source states a canonical figure, so this page gives none. The train times and fares above are the verified way to measure the journey.
• Central car parking rates. A price example for a ZTL-adjacent garage circulates from third-party tariff research, but it was not confirmed against a current Comune or SPT page, so no rate is printed.
• Città dei Balocchi dates for the coming season. The last edition ran from late November to 6 January, and no dates for the next one were published when this page was checked, so none are given.
• IAT office opening hours on Piazza Cavour. The address and phone are verified, but the office's own opening hours could not be confirmed on an official page, so they are not stated.
• Como climate from a town station. No ARPA Lombardia or Meteostat station normals could be queried, so this page uses the ERA5 reanalysis grid instead and says so. The grid reads 1-2°C cooler than the town on summer afternoons.
