Villa Olmo

The park is open every day of the year, including the botanical garden inside it. In the winter timetable it closes at 20:00, in the summer timetable at 23:00.

The villa building itself is currently closed for restoration work. The Comune's own page says the park is regularly open and gives no reopening date for the villa, and no current exhibition is published either. The Comune says visits to the villa are free when it is open, and that access can be barred during temporary exhibitions and events.

Closures You Should Expect

Hours can differ for events. The park can close partly or fully in bad weather, for maintenance or restoration work, for authorised events or for public-order needs, and closures are signposted at the gates. If you arrive and a gate is shut, read the notice rather than assuming the park is closed altogether, because there are seven entrances.

What About The Lido Next Door

The Lido di Villa Olmo is a separate operator with its own season. Its 2026 hours and prices are not published by the operator, so we do not quote any. The lido has its own page with what is known.

The Rules That Catch People Out

The ordinance bans the following in the park and botanical garden. None of them are suggestions, and the ban on picnics in particular defeats a lot of expectations.

• No picnics anywhere in the park
• No glass bottles
• No swimming in the lake from the park
• No ball games
• No drones
• No chairs, deckchairs, tables or tents on the grass
• No smoking
• No climbing trees or walls
• No staying after closing time
• No washing in the fountains

Where You Can And Cannot Walk On The Grass

The lakefront parterre lawns, the formal lawns in front of the facade, are off limits. Other lawns in the park are usable. The distinction matters if you are photographing the building, because the temptation is to walk onto the parterre for the classic shot.

Dogs

Dogs are allowed only on the paths, on a lead, and owners must collect waste. Dogs are not allowed on the lawns, including the usable ones.

Bikes And Vehicles

The park is a pedestrian area and vehicles are not allowed. Bicycles can only be pushed by hand, along the signed route across the parterre. If you arrive by bike from the lakefront promenade, plan to walk it through.

The Seven Entrances

You do not have to use one main gate. The ordinance lists seven entrances, which helps when one side is busy or a gate is shut for works.

• One from Villa del Grumello

After the Odescalchi the villa passed to the Raimondi family, then to the Visconti di Modrone, and in 1925 to the Comune di Como. The Comune uses it for cultural events and art exhibitions, which is why, in normal times, the interior hosts temporary shows rather than a fixed museum route.

The complex is bigger than the villa you see from the lake. It includes the large park, the central villa body used as an exhibition venue, the northern side wing, a southern and a northern casino, the greenhouses, the Tennis Como club in the southern side wing, an international hostel and the lido on the water next door. The Comune's culture portal says the villa, the park and the greenhouses are all part of one restoration project, so the works reach well beyond the building you see from the water.

The Façade From The Parterre

The neoclassical façade is the reason people come, and it reads best from the paths beside the lakefront parterre in front of it. Keep off the parterre lawns themselves, which the ordinance closes to visitors. The view from the paths is open, and nothing about it depends on the villa being open.

The Lakefront And The View Across The Water

The park runs down to the lake, and the parterre between villa and water is the classic framing. From the park you can carry on along the shore back towards the Tempio Voltiano, or out the other way towards Cernobbio.

The Botanical Garden

The park includes an orto botanico, covered by the same ordinance and the same hours as the rest of the park. It is included in the free entry.

The Greenhouses Under Restoration

The serre, the historic greenhouses of the complex, are part of the restoration and enhancement project with Fondazione Cariplo called 'Tra Ville e Giardini del Lago di Como'. They are part of the works, so treat them as something to see from outside rather than a destination in themselves.

A Note On The Fountains

People search for the fontana monumentale di Villa Olmo. The ordinance confirms fountains exist in the park, since it bans washing in them, but the Comune publishes no description of a named monumental fountain on the pages we read, so we give none.

The three options below assume you start at the park and either stay or continue along the shore. The park-only option is the one most visitors should plan for. The Comune publishes no walking distances along the lakefront, so the times are our estimates.

Our verdict for most visitors: give it an hour as part of a shoreline walk, and do not plan a day around the interior, because it is closed. The park earns its slot as a stop on the lakefront rather than as a standalone destination while the works run.

• The park keeps later hours in summer than most visitors expect: 07:00-23:00 every day from 5 April to 30 September, and 07:00-20:00 the rest of the year (Comune di Como, park ordinance 339 of 2023).
• Picnics, glass bottles, ball games, drones and swimming are all banned inside the park, and so are chairs or deckchairs on the grass (Comune di Como, park ordinance 339 of 2023).
• There are seven ways in: two gates on Via Simone Cantoni, three on Via per Cernobbio, one on Via Bellinzona and one from Villa del Grumello (Comune di Como, park ordinance 339 of 2023).
• The villa complex also holds a tennis club in its southern wing, an international hostel and the lido (Comune di Como, Villa Olmo page).
• The villa, the park and the greenhouses are part of a restoration project with Fondazione Cariplo called Tra Ville e Giardini del Lago di Como (oggiacomo.it, the Comune's culture portal).

By Train

Trains from Milano Cadorna arrive at Como Nord Lago on the lakefront, and trains from Milano Centrale arrive at Como San Giovanni, above the old town. The fare is the same either way, and both routes are on the Milan to Como train page.

By Boat

Lake boats land at the Piazza Cavour pier in the centre of Como. Villa Olmo lies along the western shore from there, in the direction of Cernobbio. The Como ferry page covers the fares.

On Foot

Villa Olmo sits on the lakeshore beyond the Tempio Voltiano and the Monumento ai Caduti, so most visitors simply walk out along the water from the centre. The lakefront promenade page describes that stretch. The Comune publishes no walking time, so we give none.

By Car

The Comune says only that there are large car parks nearby and names none of them. The Como parking page covers where to leave a car. Inside the park no vehicles are allowed and bikes are pushed by hand.

Finding It

If you have one day in Como, put Villa Olmo late in the afternoon. Spend the morning on the historic centre and the cathedral, take the funicular up to Brunate or a lake boat from Piazza Cavour in the middle of the day, and walk the western shore out to Villa Olmo late in the afternoon.
