Villa Erba

Short answer: not in the way a museum is. Villa Erba S.p.A. runs the estate as an international exhibition and congress centre. On its own site the company publishes no public opening hours, no visitor ticket and no general visiting days. So a casual afternoon visit has nothing to buy and no published way in.

The exception is the culture programme described below, which the venue itself describes as the moment it 'opens to the public'. Outside those days, your realistic options are three. Check the event calendar and time your visit to a fair or festival. Book one of the boat tours that pass the estate and see the estate from the lake. Or take the public ferry to Cernobbio and see it from the boat, which costs $3.46 (€3) each way from Como.

The historic rooms dedicated to Luchino Visconti can be visited by booking, but the venue presents them as an option for the guests of event clients, not as a walk-in tour. If visiting inside matters to you, plan around the culture days rather than hoping for a tour on the spot.

Le 4 Stagioni Di Villa Erba

With Teatro Sociale Como and AsLiCo, Villa Erba runs four culture days a year, one for each season. The programme mixes shows, children's workshops, wellness sessions and concerts, staged in the old villa, the park and the exhibition area. The summer day is called Parco in Festa, a festival in the park, and there is a day called Energia a Colori aimed at under-30s.

Every event in the programme carries free entry, but booking is mandatory on teatrosocialecomo.it and capacity is limited. Two rules matter. Book ahead, because places run out. And arrive on time, because a booking lapses 15 minutes before the start. Treat it as a book-ahead trip.

The venue's news page also lists public-facing fairs and festivals on the estate, such as the Lake Como Comic Art Festival 2026, the ComoCrea textile design show and the Proposte 2026 interior textiles fair. The estate's history starts long before the villa you see today. The site was originally a Benedictine nuns' monastery dedicated to Santa Maria, which the venue hypothesises dates from around the year 966. The monastery was suppressed under Emperor Joseph II of Austria, after which the Guaita wool-making family bought the property.

In 1815 Countess Vittoria Calderara sold neighbouring Villa d'Este and, with her husband General Domenico Pino, bought Villa Erba. Pino died there in 1826. The estate entered the Erba family on 18 November 1893, when it passed to Anna Brivio, wife of Luigi Erba, brother and heir of the pharmaceutical industrialist Carlo Erba. In 1903 Luigi Erba had the 'new villa' built, the family's holiday residence, to designs by the architects Angelo Savoldi and Giambattista Borsani. It is this building, with its frescoes, inlaid ceilings and Mannerist-inspired rooms, that visitors mean by Villa Erba.

The Visconti connection began on 31 December 1922, when the property passed to Carla Erba, who married Duke Giuseppe Visconti di Modrone. Their son was Luchino Visconti, the film director, who spent many childhood summers here. Carla Erba died in 1939. In 1972 Visconti withdrew to the villa and finished editing his film Ludwig there. In 1986 the Visconti heirs sold the 19th-century villa and part of the land to a company formed to build the exhibition and congress complex. Bellini's exhibition building Le Serre followed in 1988, and in 2017 the venue received the FCE Award from Federcongressi.

The venue describes four parts on one estate. The Congress Centre is glass and steel by Mario Bellini, inspired by the old Lake Como greenhouses. The Villa antica is the Erba family villa.

The Park is a centuries-old English garden on the lake. The Galoppatoio is the horse track.

The strongest film claim comes from the venue itself. Villa Erba's site says Luchino Visconti spent many childhood summers in the house, that its rooms inspired the sets of some of his films, and that its furnishings and decor are cited in Death in Venice. It also records that Visconti came here in 1972 and finished editing Ludwig in the villa. The historic rooms dedicated to Visconti can be visited today by booking, although the venue offers them mainly as a special option for the guests of event clients rather than as a public tour.

One claim does not come from the venue. A boat operator's listing calls Villa Erba 'the Ocean's Twelve villa', referring to the Hollywood heist sequel. Villa Erba's own site does not mention Ocean's Twelve anywhere, so we cannot confirm that filming claim from an official source.

If the film history is why you came, manage expectations. Without a culture day booking you will see the exterior only. If that is enough, see it from the water, and the small-group cruise with Prosecco is the lowest-priced of the listed boat tours that name it.

The venue sells the estate for weddings and private events, and the site's photos of the lawn by the lake show why couples ask. The park is 100,000 flat square metres on the water.

How much does a wedding here cost? The venue publishes no price for weddings or private events anywhere on its site, and neither do we. If you are planning one, contact the venue through its official site and ask for a quote.

What the site does publish is capacity. These are the figures it prints for the estate.

The private pier lets guests arrive by boat onto the estate's own waterfront. For ordinary visitors the takeaway is different: when the estate is booked for a private event, there is no reason to expect public access that day, so check before travelling.

• The park's tree list includes a box elder, a species the venue says was introduced to Europe in 1688, alongside Himalayan cedar, swamp cypress, pin oak and Japanese maple (villaerba.it, spaces page).

By Boat

The cheapest public option is the Navigazione ordinary boat from Como to Cernobbio, band 1, at $3.46 (€3) one way, from the pier on Piazza Cavour. Fares are on the Como ferry page. For a narrated cruise, the premium shared cruise and the small-group Prosecco tour both name Villa Erba in their listings.

Villa Erba has its own private pier for motorboats and boats up to 600 people, used for events.

By Car And Plane

The venue's own directions put it 1 km from the A9 motorway exit 'Lago di Como', with a multi-storey car park for up to 360 cars. It gives Milan Malpensa as 45 minutes away. The Cernobbio page covers the rest of the town.
